Weaving the Twine

Bilbao Art District 2014

“We knit.
Like the weavers of fishing nets; like the moms in the baserris.
We elaborate.
Like the workers in the lantegis; like the nekazaris in the heaths.
We symbolize.
Like our dances and jaiak; Like our mythology they lie.
A small act, a small element; a great gesture. So important and necessary, so collaborative. Creator of possibilities.

Thus, we make art.
We knit and link. We walk, we point; we visualize.
A small common thread; a small gesture That associates, that unites.
Small lives that do big things.

Art, to the street!
Culture, in the street!
Out on the street, from the darkness we take the small gestures, the small chores. What they are creating.
To the street, from the darkness we bring the small and valuable companies, the art of women.
We honor the weavers, who weave wool, lives: who weave art.”

The action of weaving must be read as a tribute to women and their forgotten work, a way of giving visibility and value to their enormous contribution to society. The action-installation took place in the streets of Bilbao in the month of May 2014. The thread woven by the two artists was fixed in the different elements that were found along the streets that hosted the Bilbao Art District, creating an route for the use and enjoyment of passers-by.
